Breaks and Breakthroughs

I need a break, but I’d rather have a breakthrough.”  -The Rocket Summer

This line by one of my favorite high school bands perfectly sums up where we were at a little over two weeks ago. Though we worked as hard as ever, our momentum and visible progress seemed to hit a wall as we found ourselves in a period of waiting. Though we stayed active, it seemed like every thing we did was at the mercy of something else happening or someone else stepping in. We were waiting for contacts, waiting for the government, waiting for an answer from a potential client. We prayed for a breakthrough, and then finally decided to take a break.

The Break-

Because we have feeling a bit confined in our home offices and hometowns, Evan and I have been daydreaming about taking a trip up the east coast to see some old friends and new places, but we weren’t sure our budget or workload would allow it.

Much to our delight, a good friend of ours called and asked if we could drive his furniture up to NYC for him the following week. He would pay for our gas to get there. With a need to fill and gas covered, we didn’t hesitate. We loaded down the truck and headed north. Our journey would take us all the way up the east coast, to Bar Harbor, Maine, and back in about eight days. We stopped in NYC, Boston, Bar Harbor, DC and Wake Forest and reunited with several friends and family members, some planned and some surprise visits.

As we drove, the colors of the leaves became brighter, and our breathing came a little easier. I’m not saying that the solution to every problem is to run away from it, but sometimes it’s good to step back and enjoy the sunshine. Because there was so much to do, we learned that sometimes resting can be an act of faith in itself. And it was worth it.

The Breakthrough-

Here comes the good news. A few days before we took off on our trip, several great things happened that we’re excited to share.

For one, we received our Notice of Incorporation! We’re finally legit. It was even in the newspaper (visible with any standard magnifying glass). This is such a small basic step for most business people, but it took us quite some time to learn enough about Articles of Incorporation and legal filings, so for us, this feels like quite an achievement.

Meanwhile, in Texas, Hunter has been working part-time to earn his keep until we get hired. He just got offered a temporary full-time position with a full-time salary that ends right before Christmas. Just in time for…

Kenya. Our biggest and most exciting breakthrough. We have been talking to the board of Rockbridge Ministries, a large and thriving ministry in Nakuru, Kenya, since April. Weeks after presenting our proposal and portfolio to them, we got the email saying that we are hired to launch a full media campaign involving video, photo, website, branding and social media. Everything we dream of doing. Our plane tickets were bought the next day, departing on January 3rd and returning six weeks later on February 14th.

Within one week, we went from wondering if we would ever get anywhere to being legal and hired and with a beautiful vacation to boot.

We wanted a break and prayed for a breakthrough and God gave us both. The perfect reminder that He knows what we need and when we need it.

Now we’re home and ready to pick up the jobs left undone and take on the many new tasks that Kenya has created for us. With a strict deadline before us now, our work is cut out for us and there’s a lot more of it!

Thanks to everyone who has prayed for these things with us. Please continue to pray for our preparation to go to Kenya and for Rockbridge Ministries. We are so excited for the opportunity to share their story of God’s faithfulness.

Love, Jenna.
